Erv Rowlands has been hired as our 7-12 principal - recently retired superintendent/preK-6 principal for Ruthven-Ayrshire. He will complement the work of St. Mary's PreK-6 Principal Bev Mach.

ST MARY'S GIVES BACK--The week of May 4-7 was Make a Difference Week at St. Mary's and the students have been living up to their word.  The high school student council created the end of the school year event to involve K-12 students in making a difference in the community and around the world through service and leadership, while wrapping up the year on a positive note.  A can drive for Upper Des Moines brought in non-perishable items on Monday and a pop tab drive for Ronald McDonald House on Tuesday. Students  also brought diapers for Sugar Bowl's Mother's Day Diaper Drive and wrapped up the week on Friday with class bonding activities.

The biggest part of the week was Wednesday's Kids Against Hunger event, as 5-12 students, faculty and community members packed food to feed over 40,000 people across America and throughout the world.  Those that participated each paid $15 to pack the food, with each $15 donation feeding over 100 people.  The impact on the students and staff was overwhelming as they surpassed the school goal and made enough food for 40,192 meals.

Even the preschoolers got in on the action as they planted pots of flowers for their classmate Owen K.'s parents.

Student council members (clockwise) Bailey C., Lincoln W., Dillan S., Nate L., Matt L. and Weston P. work at a bagging station mixing the contents for a fortified rice casserole.

Storm Lake St. Mary's was treated to a special guest when Sioux City Diocese Bishop R. Walker Nickless stopped by for a visit with staff and students on April 26.  Bishop Nickless and Sioux City Diocese Superintendent of Schools Dan Ryan toured the school with Principal Bev Mach, taking time to stop in classrooms and talk with children throughout the building.

Fourth grader Dalton L. was the lucky recipient of the Bishop's hat or 'zuchetto' as he joked with the kids that it makes a great cereal bowl too.
