Behind the Scenes Student

               St. Mary’s High School is putting their technology to good use – to help their own major fundraiser. Junior Molly L. used her Photoshop skills to create the artwork for the St. Mary’s Ball and Charity Auction 2012 invitations.
                The high school student used a photo of the St. Mary’s Ball and Charity Auction co-chairs Steve and Deb Peters and Bill and Leigh Laven taken against a shed on a local acreage and made it appear to be in the middle of an African savannah. The jeep’s color miraculously changed from red to green in the process.
                “It took me 6-7 hours over the course of a week or two. I had to make sure it looks just right and not choppy,” Molly said of her work, noting classmate Malcolm S. assisted with the jeep’s details in the photo. “I’ve been using Photoshop since middle school – since I learned that it existed.
                The student has also taken graphic design and web design courses such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Indesign courses through St. Mary’s and Storm Lake High School. With Lamoureux’s experience and strong work ethic, St. Mary’s High School business educator Patti Demers recruited her for the job.
                “Molly is willing to go beyond what is expected of her,” Demers explained. “She is eager to try new things and always wants to do something constructive.”
                Over 2,200 invitations with Molly's work were sent to parishioners, parents, alumni, grandparents and friends on St. Mary’s mailing list, inviting them to attend the St. Mary’s Ball and Charity Auction March 31, 2012.
               Molly helps the school and staff with other projects such as taking photos at school events and athletic activities throughout the school year. Her photos are used in the school yearbook, tournament programs, school website and press releases.
                The junior is also competing with other students with her work in the media. She has a typography piece that will be part of the Scholastic Art Fair, participating in the BVU-WISE competition and the Iowa Central Community College business competition in March.
                Other activities include speech, drama, helping to direct the middle school play, working at Grand Central Coffee Station and she has a radio show on KBVU. Molly is the daughter of Craig and Beth L. and has a younger brother, Blake.
