LAWYERED UP--Storm Lake attorney and 1965 St. Mary's graduate Steve Hamilton gives some pointers St. Mary's Middle School Mock Trial team members Tate C., Kyle B. and Mackenzie L. at a weekly practices session. The team, made up of 21 sixth through eighth grade students, is gearing up for regional competition on November 14 in Rock Rapids, with hopes of state round advancement on November 19. Hamilton has been working alongside St. Mary's teacher Jessica Biede and the junior high students since 2007, hoping to add a third win at regionals and a third appearance in Des Moines at the state level.
Each year the student teams work on a case adapted for competition from a real case. The 2009 case involves a defendant on trial for involuntary manslaughter during the commission of setting off a wild fire.
The mock trial is designed to introduce students to our legal system by providing a challenging, academic competition. The program offers students an opportunity for personal growth and achievement, emphasizing the importance of research, presentation, and teamwork
