What is a planned gift?
Also called a deferred gift, a planned gift is a way for donors to make a larger gift to St. Mary’s than they could from their income. Planned gifts can be made during a donor’s lifetime or at their death.
Donors make planned gifts to both help their favorite charity and also enjoy tax savings.
Consider remembering St. Mary's Parish, St. Mary's School and/or St. Mary's Foundation in your will and/or estate planning.
Gift timing
Now - Donors can give an outright gift of an appreciated asset such as real estate or securities
Over time – Donors can make a gift to St. Mary’s that actually gives the donor a steady income stream until their death
Later – Donors can designate a gift to be payable at their death.
I want to give a gift now. How can I do this?
If you have appreciated securities, contact your broker regarding changing the ownership of the securities from your name to St. Mary’s. (Parish, school and/or foundation.) You can avoid capital gains tax on the asset by transferring ownership rather than liquidating the asset. The paperwork is minimal but can make a big impact. Be sure to let St. Mary’s know that you have gifted the stock so that we can properly thank you.
If you are considering a gift of real estate, please contact St. Mary’s first. We must determine if our organization would be able to accept the gift.
I’d like to make a gift now but I need income from this cash/asset. How can I do this?
If you have a lump sum of cash or own an appreciated asset, you can consider placing these gifts in a charitable gift annuity – if you are at least 65 years of age and your gift is valued at $10,000 or more.
You can enjoy a tax deduction the year the gift is made and then receive income from the charity for the rest of your life! Any remainder in the annuity at that time will be forwarded to the charity. If you want to see how this can work for you, contact St. Mary’s Development Office at (712)732-3110.
I won’t be able to make a gift until my death, how can I do this?
It’s simple, you can make a bequest in your will to leave a certain percentage of your estate or a cash amount to St. Mary’s Parish, School and/or Foundation. Be sure to talk to your attorney about creating a will and taking care of your family.
Be sure to let us know that you have made a gift so that we can properly thank you and include you in the Legacy Circle. (An honorary society recognizing those who have included us in their wills and/or estate plans.)
